FULL-TIME LABORER/TRUCK DRIVER DPW POSITION
JOB DESCRIPTION
Stillwater Township is accepting applications for a full-time Public Works Truck Driver/Laborer. Under immediate or general supervision, performs various types of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance of public buildings, parks, grounds, and roads. Duties include but are not limited to chipping, landscaping, leaf/brush collection, shoveling, plowing, storm sewer maintenance, road work, paving, building and grounds maintenance, cleaning, and other duties related to public works projects as assigned and as needed. Must be able to lift 90 lbs. High School diploma or equivalent required. Candidate must be customer service oriented and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public. Must possess the ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks with established deadlines. A valid New Jersey Driver’s CDL Class B License in good standing is required. Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions and on an emergency basis when needed. 40 hours per week. EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Loads, lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment.
Digs trenches and does manual grading.
Cleans incinerators.
Collects rubbish and other refuse.
Cuts grass.
Trims hedges.
Waters lawns and flower beds.
Loads and unloads trucks.
Shovels snow.
Whitewashes walls.
Shovels gravel and sand.
Mixes cement and mortar.
Places forms used in concrete work.
Performs cold patching.
Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, and weeds.
Cuts down trees.
Digs out stumps of trees, and digs out and destroys poisonous
vines, weeds and undergrowth.
Learns to operate construction and/or maintenance equipment.
May learn to operate a pneumatic drill.
May learn to operate and make minor repairs to street, road,
and related public works equipment.
May rake asphalt mixtures used in paving to proper thickness
and grade.
May distribute asphalt mixtures to eliminate hollows and high
spots in the surface under the construction or repair.
May patch joints and edges of pavement with asphalt cement.
May tamp and smooth asphalt pavement.
May operate and maintain asphalt heating kettle.
Cleans sludge beds.
Sweeps streets and sidewalks.
Pries and hammers apart sections of wall and roof.
Loads debris into truck for removal.
Sorts, piles, and cleans salvageable brick, stone, lumber, and
metal work.
Under direction, may learn to make routine repairs to valves,
fittings, pipe sections or other equipment used in the area of
assignment.
Receives written and/or oral assignments and drives trucks of varied
types including trucks used for road maintenance and construction work
and road oiling, snow plowing, and ice control work.
Assists with the repair and installation of snowplows and spreaders.
Performs minor repairs and adjustments on truck.
Supplies trucks with gas, oil, and water; keeps garage clean and in
order; keeps records of trips.
Checks, cleans, greases, washes, and performs the required adjustments
to trucks and other auxiliary equipment.
Collects, loads, and unloads, with and without assistance, various
types of equipment, and delivers same by truck to specified destinations.
Operates snow removal equipment to keep roads clear.
Maintains records of receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption, and
mileage traveled.
Uses power take-off to give power to winch and uses controls to wind
and unwind the winch cable for raising and lowering heavy materials on
and off the truck.
Drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose
materials such as sand, gravel, and bituminous paving material by
pulling levers and turning crank to tilt body and dump contents.
May inspect truck prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil,
water, and to see that tires are inflated and that lights and brakes
work properly.
May make minor emergency repairs to trucks such as changing tires or
installing light bulbs, fuses, and tire chains.
When not engaged in driving a truck or other equipment, may perform
other work such as road and landscape construction, building
maintenance and repair work, groundskeeping, laboring, or other
unskilled work.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with
tandem/dual rear axles and auxiliary equipment such as snow plow, salt
spreader, power take-off, winch, and lift body.
LICENSE:
Appointees must possess a valid Class B CDL with manual endorsement and airbrake or better.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods used to operate trucks and auxiliary
equipment.
Knowledge of the methods used to clean and lubricate trucks, and of
the methods used to service batteries, tires and lights.
Knowledge of the minor repair procedures that can be performed outside
of the repair shop.
Knowledge of the methods used to load, unload, and deliver various
materials.
Ability to detect problems with the operation of the truck and
auxiliary equipment.
Ability to operate trucks and auxiliary equipment such as snow plows,
spreaders, and power take-off in a skilled, safe, and competent
manner.
Ability to load and unload varied types of freight.
Ability to service, clean, and perform minor repairs to trucking
equipment.
Ability to properly load and arrange cargo and determine proper
clearances, turning radius, braking distances, and distance to
maintain from a preceding vehicle.
Ability to use brakes and gearshift controls in a skilled and
effective manner.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Candidates must reside in New Jersey or have a waiver from the Division of Local Government Services and must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug test.
