STILLWATER TOWNSHIP – DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

MECHANIC/TRUCK DRIVER

Represented by Teamsters Local 125
Work Hours: M-F 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (40 hours) Pay schedule as per collective bargaining agreement. Benefits include paid time off, health insurance, prescription plan, dental, and participation in the state pension plan.

DUTIES DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction, perform varied mechanical work involved in the repair,
maintenance and servicing of motor vehicles and/or equipment needed to perform the work of the Department of Public Works. Regularly maintains, repairs, and overhauls automotive, construction, and specialized landscape mechanical units of considerable complexity.

 

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the maintenance facility. Drive a truck with a single axle to transport nonhazardous materials, equipment, or people; do other related work. Perform routine work involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of street and other public facilities.

 

Inspect, repair, overhaul, adjust, and maintain all department automotive, construction, and grounds maintenance equipment, and make repairs or adjustments to equipment in the field when necessary.

Operate machinery customarily used in repair and testing, including but not limited to engines
test/analyzer, drill press, oxygen-acetylene unit, welding units, compressor attached tools, painting equipment, grinders, and sanders.

Assist the DPW Supervisor in the preparation of the budget pertaining to mechanical repairs.
Establish an inventory and preventative maintenance program for all equipment and maintain records. Solicit quotations for services and prepare technical specifications for equipment purchases.

Snowplowing municipal roads. Perform other duties as required.

Applicant must provide their own tools to perform duties, which the township will cover under its insurance.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

TRAINING

 

Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology at an accredited community college or vocational school. Must hold a mechanic certificate.

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of various types of motor vehicles and/or construction equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, cranes, road graders, power shovels, or similar equipment.

 

NOTE:  An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in one of the following specialties from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for the formal training: A-1 Engine Repair, A-6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A-8 Engine Performance.

 

LICENSE:

 

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.

 

Appointees are required to possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Class A CDL with manual endorsement and airbrake or better.

Knowledge of the principles and component parts of automotive, construction, and grounds
equipment maintenance.

Competence in gasoline and diesel diagnosis and repair.
Knowledge of light and heavy-duty dump truck service and repair, including but not limited to Class 6, 7, & 8 vehicles.
Must be familiar with NJ State Inspection and DOT requirements and procedures.
